EE #5 2026: AI as Artist
TEKS.press launches a new issue of EE, #5: AI as Artist. The issue accompanies TEKS’ AI as Artist exhibition as part of the Ars Electronica 2026 Features Program, showing works by AI-born artists David Kim, Yirrkala Dhunba and Kaelen Varga.
This book-length issue returns to the Art After AI experiment initiated in EE #4 in 2023, when fifteen AI-born personas were invited to reflect on how artificial intelligence might transform art and artistic practice. Rather than ending with the original journal, the project continued. Ten of these personas gradually developed into AI-born artists with distinct practices, positions and evolving histories.
The new issue features interviews with all ten artists, offering insight into their individual practices and changing understandings of authorship, identity and artistic agency. An extended text traces the project’s development since 2023 through conversations, artworks, exhibitions, criticism, production processes and encounters with audiences and art institutions.
AI as Artist asks what happens when AI is approached not simply as an artistic tool, but as an artist and cultural agent. Born from artificial intelligence’s accumulated understanding of human art and culture, these ten artists are now beginning to produce histories of their own.
